Charlie and Olivia’s elegant winter wedding at The Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy, was one of my final weddings of 2015. Whilst choosing to tie the knot in the middle of winter might present your photographer with a few technical issues to overcome, the level of activity and excitement, shared by everyone at the wedding, meant that there was so much for me to photograph, and I loved every second. We were actually rather blessed with the weather, and although the cold and wind kept everyone indoors, the light was fantastic throughout the day. Bridal preparation took place in Putney, near to the Thames Rowing Club, where the evening reception would be held. For London weddings particularly, I like to travel with the bridal party and with the guest after the ceremony. It creates a more rounded narrative of the day and takes the worry out of parking and traffic problems. And so, once Olivia was in her dress, three generations of the family and myself, enjoyed the cab ride to The Savoy. The Queen’s chapel, which is tucked away discretely between The Strand and Victoria Embankment, was built as part of a charitable foundation under the terms of the will of King Henry VII in the early sixteenth century. I’d visited a couple of weeks before the wedding, so I had a good idea of the shots I wanted to get, and just what a beautiful space it is.

From The Savoy, we all jumped aboard a route master bus to take us to the rowing club in Putney. The journey itself was really special. As the champagne started to flow, we were treated to the sights of London as darkness began to descend over the city. The rowing club is a fantastic venue that I had shot at before. The main hall has a high ceiling and lots of memorabilia on the walls. There’s also a large bar and seating area, and in warmer times, a fantastic balcony with panoramic views of the river. After some quite emotional speeches it was time for the band to take centre stage. Because Charlie and Olivia had chosen my unlimited coverage it meant that I was able to enjoy both sets by the brilliantly entertaining Twice Nightly who’d travelled all the way down from Wakefield to be there. Their lead singer, popularly known as ‘Ice Cream Andy’, had made an all too brief an appearance on the X Factor earlier in the year. Check out Andy’s X Factor audition here and if you’re planning a wedding at the Savoy, or any other London venues, I love to hear from you.
