Monochrome Wedding Photography

I love monochrome wedding photography, or black and white photography in general. When I first took up photography as a hobby, I’d take rolls of colour film to be processed at Boots, but very quickly progressed to black and white photography, and even set up a darkroom in my bedroom to make my own prints.

Nowadays, I provide my couples with colour and monochrome versions of all their photos. This is a win win for a number of reasons. Firstly, you get to experience your whole wedding in colour, and in timeless black and white. Secondly (and this is particularly relevant for winter weddings) the black and white can look really flattering when the quality of light is lacking and adversely affecting the colour photos. Lastly when it comes to designing your album, you’re able to pick from your favourite colour and monochrome versions at will.

Emma and Sam had a wonderful summer wedding at Pembroke Lodge, and I’ve included a few pops of colour among my selection of monochrome wedding photography below. Historically black and white photography has been a favourite among photojournalists, and it works well for a storytelling style of wedding photography like my own.
